York Remote- Evaluation
Remote Evaluation: York
We preformed our version of remote at the York theatre royal’s Black box
theatre in front of a director from the national theatre connections and it was
also recorded to be shown back to associates of his. We knew from the beginning
of doing this that our theatre that we originally preformed in was a lot bigger
than the stage we’d be preforming in at York that’s why we had taped out how
much space we would have and we rehearsed in that space for a while. It felt a
little bit squished when we had been rehearsing it at college so I think we
were all quite worried that the stage we would be preforming on may be smaller
that we had rehearsed for however, when we got there it turned out the stage
was a comfortable size. It didn’t take long for us to adapt to our new stage and
in my opinion, the smaller stage was far better for this performance. It felt
like we were all closer together and it was a lot easier to react when things
were going on right next too you rather than on the other side of the stage
because it just felt like there was more that you could react to, and I think
because the rehearsal went well and even the woman who did the music said she
loved the play and that was only in rehearsal so that really raised our spirits
and melted a lot of our nerves away. I think the performance went extremely well.
Everyone’s energy was up and there was a lot of excitement in the air. We tried
to avoid some of the nervousness by singing and dancing beforehand and I think
it made us all feel a little bit calmer and together. Our performance had a
good steady flow, everybody was on the ball with their ques and everyone was focused
and dedicated to their characters and telling the story. The audience looked
intrigued the whole time because we maintained the enthusiasm throughout which
is always really rewarding, its awful looking into the audience and seeing a
bunch of bored faces, that’s why I kept either holding my baby, chatting to Connor, reading the newspaper, paining my nails, just so I always had something
going on. I think, after watching the other remote, our set was really good. There
was a lot of stuff that brought the stage to life whereas the other group only
had a tree, some leaves and a stick, which is all you’d think you would need,
whereas, our team thought outside the box with benches, prams, scooters, cards,
newspapers, roller-skates and yoga matts. There was only a few problems in the
play but I don’t really think it was that noticeable and I don’t think any of
our chances are ruined by them, the only problems I noticed where Justin accidentally
messed up his first lines, which was just because we were nervous and felt
pressure to preform well and that is also the same as Charley who messed up one
line but it was so unnoticeable so unless you’ve read the script it doesn’t matter.
The good part is that when it happened everyone stayed in character and didn’t let
it affect them in the rest of the play, it shows professionalism and probably made
us look more mature and reliable because they’ve seen how we handle situations
like that. In my opinion this play went better than the home play. I think the
projection problems we had were fixed and everyone was a lot louder, that’s something
I’m happy with, I was asking my family who was in the audience and they said
they could always hear me so that’s what I’m really happy with. Because the
space was smaller, I feel that we worked together as a unit more. I think the performance
was surprisingly fun, although there was nerves before once id got to the bench
on the stage I was more exited about putting on a show for Tom and everyone
else watching, the nerves would come but id just tell myself that I know what
I'm doing and that we’ve done it a lot so I was okay. Afterwards my mam was
talking about different characters she liked which weren’t named characters
they were ones we made ourselves which just proved how good the character
development was. With my character, Cindy Appleton, I wanted to give her a
soul. I wanted people to feel like they were her friend and when she was speaking
its like she's having a gossip with them and Justin’s character Connor, I just really wanted them to be connected to
the story. I feel like on the day of the show my performance changed. It was
more lively which is obviously because of the adrenaline, so that was fun and
helpful. This experience, of the script being something I’ve never worked with
before so that’s something new I have experience with as well as completely making
my own character. I feel like now that we’ve been on tour I have so much more
confidence and I think we’ve all grew throughout this process.
