Task 2 part B - Collaborations
collaborations as an ensemble
I'm a munchkin in cast 3, there are about ten of us in each cast. so me and the rest of cast 3 all sat together and created names for our characters so we could give them depth and a backstory. we then created connections to each other, living in a tight knit community they're bound to know one another so we created personal relations for each of them. I was a mother munchkin to La Toya, Gracie Conner and Laura. Charley sells sweeties with Gracie. Aiden was the father munchkin and had a close reflation to his son Conner. Harvey, Morgan, Jack was friends with all the other boys and there were other mothers like Bailey, Emily and Ash who were friends with my munchkin. This created a natural chemistry on stage so make us all seem familiar and bounce off one another.
My cast again worked together to stage a piece where all of the munchkins first enter the stage and meet Dorothy. We were scared of Dorothy at first but we were grateful to her for killing the wicked witch. However, we trusted the good witch and we needed to convey that through this scene. We started by all creeping out of one corner in a huddle but we didn't think it had the impact we wanted. We wanted it to look like we were all living our normal lives and got scared and hid wherever we were closest to in a panic. so we all come from the four different corners at different times in small little groups or pairs. We felt this worked a lot better and Kelly agreed.
Since we weren't allowed to have any songs in the show Tom kindly offered to create music on the piano for this scene ( scene and music below). The music was in beats so we tried to time our movements to the music. It worked however, we think the music took away some of the substance of the scene so we ultimately decided against using the song.
Tom and Kelly directed the chant however we spent lots of time going over it and discussing how we could stage it. We had to look like a team so we really needed to pick apart the chant and discuss what we were feeling and meaning in each line. we also worked on adding energy to the scene so we could really live up to the energetic munchkin persona.
we discussed voices at the very beginning and decided straight away that none of us would use our own voices or accents in the scene and that we would go higher pitched in an exaggerated american accent. This was done to emphasise the munchkins child like characteristics and show they have very high energy because normally if you're tiered or have less energy your voice will be deeper because of a lack of effort.
( for some reason the pictures are uploading as codes, I'll get it sorted out)
